sixteen:ix (i.77:1) is a widescreen aspect ratio with a width of sixteen units and meridian of 9.
Once seen equally exotic,[ane] since 2009, it has become the near common aspect ratio for televisions and computer monitors and is also the international standard format of digital television set HDTV Total Hard disk drive and SD TV. It has replaced the fullscreen 4:3 aspect ratio.
16:nine (one.vii7:ane) (said as sixteen by nine or sixteen to nine) is the international standard format of HDTV, not-Hard disk drive digital television set and analog widescreen goggle box PALplus. Nippon'due south Hi-Vision originally started with a 15:9 (1.66:1) ratio but converted when the international standards group introduced a wider ratio of xvi to 9. Many digital video cameras have the capability to record in 16:9, and xvi:9 is the only widescreen attribute ratio natively supported by the DVD standard. DVD producers can also cull to testify even wider ratios such every bit ane.85:1 and 2.40:1 within the 16:9 DVD frame by hard matting or calculation black bars within the image itself.
History [edit]
Derivation of the 16:9 aspect ratio
The principal effigy shows 4:3, one.85:ane, and two.35:1 rectangles with the same area A, and 16:9 rectangles that covers (black) or is common to (grey) them. The adding considers the extreme rectangles, where m and n are multipliers to maintain their respective aspect ratios and areas.
Dr. Kerns H. Powers, a member of the SMPTE Working Group on Loftier-Definition Electronic Product, first proposed the 16:9 (1.77:1) aspect ratio in 1984,[2] when nobody was creating 16:ix videos. The popular choices in 1980 were iv:3 (based on Television standard's ratio at the fourth dimension), fifteen:9 (the European "flat" ane.six6:1 ratio), one.85:1 (the American "flat" ratio) and two.35:1 (the CinemaScope/Panavision) ratio for anamorphic widescreen.
Powers cut out rectangles with equal areas, shaped to match each of the popular attribute ratios. When overlapped with their heart points aligned, he found that all of those aspect ratio rectangles fit within an outer rectangle with an attribute ratio of i.77:1 and all of them also covered a smaller mutual inner rectangle with the same aspect ratio 1.77:1.[3] The value institute by Powers is exactly the geometric mean of the farthermost aspect ratios, 4:iii and 2.35:one, ≈one.77 which is coincidentally close to sixteen:9. Applying the aforementioned geometric mean technique to 16:9 and four:iii yields an aspect ratio of around 1.5396:one, sometimes approximated as fourteen:9 (1.55:one), which is too used every bit a compromise between these ratios.[iv]
While 16:ix (1.sevenseven:one) was initially selected as a compromise format, the subsequent popularity of HDTV broadcast has solidified 16:9 as possibly the most common video aspect ratio in utilise.[5] Near iv:3 (i.33:ane) and 2.xl:1 video is at present recorded using a "shoot and protect" technique[half dozen] that keeps the main action within a xvi:9 (1.77:1) inner rectangle to facilitate Hard disk broadcast[ commendation needed ]. Conversely it is quite common to use a technique known as eye-cutting, to approach the challenge of presenting material shot (typically sixteen:9) to both an HD and legacy 4:3 audience simultaneously without having to compromise image size for either audition. Content creators frame critical content or graphics to fit within the i.33:1 raster space. This has similarities to a filming technique called open matte.
After the original sixteen:nine Action Plan of the early 1990s, the European Spousal relationship instituted the 16:ix Action Programme,[vii] just to accelerate the development of the avant-garde television services in 16:9 attribute ratio, both in PALplus (compatible with regular PAL broadcasts) and also in HD-MAC (an early HD format). The Community fund for the xvi:9 Action Plan amounted to €228,000,000.
Over a long menstruum in the late 2000s and early 2010s, the computer industry switched from 4:3 to 16:ix as the well-nigh mutual aspect ratio for monitors and laptops. A 2008 report by DisplaySearch cited a number of reasons for this shift, including the power for PC and monitor manufacturers to expand their production ranges by offering products with wider screens and college resolutions, helping consumers to more easily prefer such products and "stimulating the growth of the notebook PC and LCD monitor market".[eight] By using the same attribute ratio for both TVs and monitors, manufacturing can be streamlined and research costs reduced by not requiring two separate sets of equipment, and since a 16:nine is narrower than a sixteen:ten panel of the aforementioned length, more than panels tin exist created per sheet of glass.[9] [10] [11]
In 2011, Bennie Budler, product manager of IT products at Samsung S Africa, confirmed that monitors capable of 1920 × 1200 resolutions are not being manufactured anymore. "It is all about reducing manufacturing costs. The new 16:9 attribute ratio panels are more cost-effective to manufacture locally than the previous xvi:10 panels".[12]
In March 2011, the xvi:9 resolution 1920 × 1080 became the most common used resolution among Steam'due south users. The previous most common resolution was 1680 × 1050 (16:10).[13]
Properties [edit]
xvi:9 is the only widescreen aspect ratio natively supported past the DVD format. An Anamorphic PAL+ DVD with a full frame, may incorporate 768 × 576p, but a video player software will stretch this to 1024 × 576p.
Producers tin can also choose to bear witness even wider ratios such equally 1.85:1 and 2.4:1 inside the 16:9 DVD frame by hard matting or adding blackness confined inside the image itself. Some films which were fabricated in a 1.85:1 attribute ratio, such equally the U.S.-Italian co-production Man of La Mancha and Kenneth Branagh'southward Much Ado About Zero, fit quite comfortably onto a one.77:1 HDTV screen and have been issued equally an enhanced version on DVD without the black confined. Many digital video cameras accept the adequacy to record in sixteen:9.

Countries [edit]
Europe [edit]
In Europe, xvi:9 is the standard broadcast format for nigh TV channels and all Hard disk drive broadcasts. Some countries adopted the format for analogue television, outset by using the PALplus standard (now obsolete) and so by only using WSS on normal PAL broadcasts.
